Yahweh rophe, the lord who heals
Who is God? He is Elohim, the Almighty and Sovereign God. He has absolute power and everyone is accountable to him and will eventually be judged by him.
God also says he is Yahweh Rophe, the Lord who heals. The Hebrew word Rophe means to heal, cure, restore or make whole. In Exodus 15:26 shortly after bringing Israel out of Egyptian bondage and providing drinkable water for them he announces "I am the Lord who heals you."
It is great to know God who is creator and judge over all the earth is also the God who wants to heal, restore and make us whole. We are spiritually broken. Our righteousness to nothing but filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). We can't stand before God on our own righteousness and hope for any good outcome. But when we stand before him in the righteousness of Jesus Christ our salvation is a done deal. Because through Jesus Christ Yahweh Rophe heals us of our greatest need. He heals us of our sins.
God has been in the healing business from the moment of Adam and Eve's sin. He began with animal sacrifice of Jesus Christ. God has healed physically and even raised the dead at times but his greatest healing comes in his spiritual healing. Through the eye of prophecy Isaiah foretold our healing by the sacrifice of Jesus. He says in Isaiah 53 he would bear our sins and carry our sorrows. He would be wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities and by his stripes we would be healed.
On the day of Pentecost when people heard Peter preach those who were cut to the heart ask, "what shall we do" (Acts 2:37). Peter's answer to man's most urgent and persistent problem came back very simply. "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Act 2:38). The answer was now a simple one because the wounds had been opened, the bruises had been inflicted, and the stripes delivered. In the words of Jesus "it is finished." Yahweh Rophe (the Lord who heals) has provided. God is not only sovereign and almighty, he is the healing God.
